About the Author
Kim Sullivan is a wife, mother, woman of faith, writer, and someone who has never been able to leave a story untold. Throughout her life, she has written her way through the hardest seasons. That dedication ultimately gave her the courage to write the book she has been carrying for thirty years.Kim understands grief not as a subject she studied, but as a road she has walked her entire adult life. She lost her only sibling, Scott, when she was twenty. As a young mother, she endured multiple losses, including a medically necessary termination of twin daughters and the death of her daughter, Sarah, who was diagnosed with Trisomy 18. Years later, she buried both of her parents just two years apart. She writes with the authority of someone who has lived with grief and has spent a lifetime helping others learn to live with it too.For nearly three decades, Kim has been the person grieving mothers are referred to by family and friends. She has sat with countless women in their darkest moments, meeting them exactly where they are in their grief journey. Those conversations grew into a desire to speak honestly about the parts of grief that are hard to talk about, which led her to write the book she wishes she'd found all those years ago.Kim met the love of her life, Brian, at eighteen, and they have been married for more than thirty years. They raised two children together. Their son, Tyler, is a successful content creator, and their daughter, Sydni, and daughter-in-law, Annie, are both nurses.Kim and Brian live in Idaho, where they love exploring the great outdoors. When she is not writing, adventuring, camping, gardening, or fly fishing, you will find her behind a camera capturing the story of a life well lived. She reads voraciously, loves people deeply, and has never met an animal she didn't want to bring home.Always Their Mom is her debut book.
ALWAYS THEIR MOM
A Thirty-Year Journey Through Child Loss
and the Lessons Worth Sharing
When a mother loses a child, the grief is unimaginable. The raw emotions that follow can be complicated to navigate, and honest sorrow is rarely given the space it needs to breathe. Grieving mothers often walk in the shadows of expectations to heal and move on, afraid to say what they really feel. Left unspoken, that heartbreak rarely heals. It only settles deeper.Always Their Mom is the book Kim Sullivan wishes she'd had after losing her own children. Written from a place of deep faith, it draws on thirty years of not only surviving her own losses but also learning to carry them. This is not a book written in the raw aftermath of trauma. It is told from decades of living with grief, with the clarity, honesty, and wisdom that only time can bring. Healing is possible, even as grief remains. This book follows two journeys of the same heart: the one that led her into the shadows of grief, and the one that brought her back out.Part One follows Kim through motherhood. Her first pregnancy was filled with chaos but resulted in a beautiful baby boy. Her second pregnancy required an emergency medical termination of twins at almost 24 weeks. Her third pregnancy came with a Trisomy 18 diagnosis, and her daughter, Sarah, lived 25 hours. Her fourth pregnancy carried its own emotional complications and almost ended in another devastating loss. Despite the constant heartbreak, Kim refused to give up. In the decades that followed, she realized that through the hardest seasons of living with grief, she had learned lessons worth sharing.Part Two is the heart of the book, where Kim shares what she wants others to know about living with grief. She speaks openly about the devastation of the medical termination and the guilt and shame that followed, as well as the shock of her daughter's Trisomy 18 diagnosis. She challenges common myths like "time heals all wounds" and "God doesn't give you more than you can handle." Drawing on the questions grieving parents have asked her most over the years, she shares how she survived, how her marriage survived, what happened to her faith, how she changed, and, most importantly, how she finally moved forward.Always Their Mom isn't only for parents who have lost a child. It is also for the family and friends who want to support loved ones through heartbreak. With real-life examples of what helps and what doesn't, it acknowledges the awkwardness of grief while working to normalize the conversations that matter to everyone.Written with honesty, faith, and hope, Always Their Mom is an invitation to talk about what really hurts. Though every mother's story of loss is different, grieving mothers share one unchanging truth: even after their children are gone, they are always their mom.
